More than 400 officials from throughout the state attended the League's 2011 Capital Conference April 5-6 in Lansing, Michigan. The conference focused on the many changes taking place in Lansing and Washington D.C. and the potential impact these changes will have on Michigan's cities, villages and urban townships. The conference had sessions on the Michigan Medical Marihuana Law, Complete Streets initiative, Gov. Rick Snyder's budget proposal, plans to reduce revenue sharing to Michigan communities, long-term budget solutions, the new emergency f! inancial management law and many other topics. Speakers included Bill Rustem, director of strategy for Governor Snyder; Carol Shafto, Alpena Mayor and President of the MML Board; Gilda Jacobs, president and CEO of the Michigan League for Human Services; Doug Rothwell, president and CEO of Business Leaders for Michigan; Eric Schneidewind, president of AARP of Michigan; Charles Ballard, economics professor at Michigan State University; Mitch Bean, director of the Michigan House Fiscal Agency; Craig Their, director of state affairs for the Citizens Research Council; Sen. John Pappageorge, R-Troy; Rep. Earl Poleski, R-Jackson; Jared Rodriguez, of the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce; Carolyn Coleman, director of federal relations for the National League of Cities; CeCe Grant, Michigan statewide organizer for Transportation of American; Tim Hoeffner, administrator for High Speed Rail & Innovative Project Advancement for MDOT; Keith Ledbetter, director of legislative affairs for ! MITA; Battle Creek Mayor Susan Baldwin; State Rep. Vicki Barne! tt, D-Fa rmington Hills; Rich Morrison, economic development director for Mt. Pleasant; Melanie Piana, Ferndale councilmember; Keith Baker, Midland planning director; Michigan Municipal League CEO Dan Gilmartin; Summer Minnick, director of state affairs for the League; Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski, League board vice president; Linden Mayor David Lossing; John Lindenmayer, associate director of the League of Michigan Bicyclists; Sean Mann, program coordinator of Let's Save Michigan; League staff members Andy Schor, Samantha Jones Harkins, Arnold Weinfeld; and many others. During the Conference, the League's board of trustees had its April meeting and unanimously approved freezing member dues for the 2011-12 fiscal year, which begins July 1.
